Actually, JLC do do ABS, but in FDM. maybe their printers are good enough to make these cases in ABS?

White resin cases

Post by Martin »

I've just received a trial set of these lovely white resin cases - fantastic..

Andrew is correct there is no 'recess' to catch the raised lip between the top and bottom of the smaller cases, but I think when I get the screw in place I should be able to glue some 'lips / nibs' in the recess to make this connection.

I need to adapt the rear of the case for access to the USB socket and drill out a hole for the LED. But as I couldn't wait to try the 'slider' I put the Comm Link board in the larger case and it fits well into the Top Slot and wakes up the Organiser when connected to the PC USB so everything looks good there.

The slider is perfect, a lot better than the one I printed, I thought is was OK at the time but after seeing these - well!

These look fantastic and secure the future of the Comms Link.

Sincerely and in good faith
Martin

I'm glad you like them. These were sent directly from JLC3D so i haven't seen them and there may be defects, but JLC are good at reporting defects in prints. This was an experiment, I've not sent items direct like this before but it seems to have worked. Sending the items direct is quicker and cheaper and as 3D prints come in singles, rather than the 5 PCBs that have to be purchased, its not worth having these sent to me and then sent on again. The cost of this order was £7.84, which includes shipping, taxes and duties, and the prints themselves. That is probably very similar to the cost of sending a parel like this from me to the final destination. Here's the breakdown:

Merchandise Total: £5.25
Shipping Charge: £1.28
Customs duties & taxes: £1.31
Order Total: £7.84

That's for two cases in four pieces. The smaller case parts were £0.75 and £1.02, the larger was £2.71 and £0.77.

This order took 10 days from end of manufacture to delivery, and manufacture is usually from a day to 3 days.

The design is not correct for the smaller case, that needs some work, but the larger case isn't far off. I've made the swalls of these cases 2mm or so, and that has resulted in very rigid cases.

I'm going to release the openscad files that created these cases, as I think these are at a nearly finished state. They are parametric models so should be easily adjusted for cutouts etc. I have also started on a datapack model but that's not finished. Barely started actually. I'll get round to it.

Making cases

Post by Martin »

Hi Andrew

I understand now why the return address was not yours on the packaging. They were well packaged in a small box with lots of bubble.

I agree that you could adjust the small cases slightly.

(1)
'The smaller case should have a recess matched to a raised lip for mating the two halves together'
(2) A small cut out for the USB socket
(3) If you don't trust JLC3D to put a small hole for the LED then maybe a small 'dimple' to help the user position the drill ready to drill it out.

Look Andrew if you don't do anything they are still easily adjusted by anyone with a little patience.

Sincerely
Martin

PS Now that you may not be sending them out... Put a makers mark on the inside of the case! (Post Code?)

The files for these cases are here:

https://github.com/blackjetrock/psion-organiser-2-cases

They are not perfect, but are a start.

Yes, these could be adjusted with a drill and file. The resin is quite easy to drill and file. I suppose I could put a mark on them, I tend not to do that, not sure why.

The biggest problem is the lack of a proper fit between the narrow case top and base. i got that totally wrong.

There are some very very good case models here:

i haven't printed any of these yet, but will do, and they look identical to the originals, as far as I can tell.

Hi Andrew

Good spot.. (questions questions questions) Do we know who this chap is? Does he know about our forum? Have you looked at them in FreeCAD? (I don't have it!). It looks like they have the 'OLD' recesses (for power and RS232 lead) in the rear of the case rather than 'NEW' for USB? From the photo it looks like an early version case - look for the upstanding locator clip in the inside left of the case these have been removed on some of the cases I have - Peter will know if I'm right.

Fascinating

I have managed to import the models in to OpenSCAD and from there it is possible to modify them, so different cutouts ar possible (or additions).
I tried FreeCAD but it crashed, unfortunately, but that might be my laptop, which is in a bit of an odd state.
