Retrofest 2025

Post by PaulK »

Hi all.

Just been clicking around YouTube and the increasingly accurate algorithm kindly brought up a video up showing Retrofest 2025!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nX9UIJkQ7Hc&t=127s

I've not watched it properly yet, just skimmed through, but the Psion Org2 pops up a few times :-) Guessing this must have been Andrew's stand? Looked VERY impressive - just sorry that I couldn't make it along - hopefully next time.

Head to 25 mins 11 seconds and 1 hr 20 mins for a glimpse of our favourite machine!

Cheers,
Paul

PS: Andrew - assuming you did attend, and it was your stand, did you get much interest in the Psion gear? What about your re-creation? Missing out on seeing that is my biggest regret! Cheers.

Hi,

Yes, I did attend and yes, that is my stand. That was filmed during the Saturday setup, I think, and I wasn't there as I set up on the Sunday. Casio stuff on the left hand side (I have recreations of Casios as well) and Psion on the right. It was difficult to gauge interest at the time, I was worried when it opened that no-one would be interested, but I ended up talking to people for two full days. I had no time to see much of the show myself, and only saw stuff I'd liked to have had a look at in some videos that have appeared. Definitely interest in the Psions, I chatted to one lady who worked for Psion back in the
80s, another person wrote a car park ticketing system using the Organiser II and printer. Many people who had Organisers in the past as well.
I showed the recreation to several people, I think it was well received. I had a chat with forum member 1333David on the Saturday, too.

Retrofest 2025

Post by Martin »

Good spot Paul

I've watched it and am quite jealous of Dave who managed to make to the festival and to see Andrew. As we only got back from leave a couple of days before I'm not sure I would have survived the 3½ hour drive there and back. Maybe next time.

I've watched all the video and of course reran the section showing Andrews stand. I noticed a couple of things, the speech synthesiser, Ram and Flash packs for example. Well done Andrew. Did you get chance to 'plug' the forum?

I watched the whole video looking out for my favourite QL but didn't notice anyone featuring it. I dd see the Jupiter Ace, NewBrain and Oric 1 though.

Sincerely
Martin

I can think of at least 3 additions I would like to have added:
1) The DMC
2) The Mark III copier which looks like something from Dr Who or Startrek when operating!
3) Laser barcode scanner with the Psion II
Maybe next time?

Yes, I didn't see a QL, but there was a lot of other rare stuff. I didn't see quite a bit of it until the videos came out, due to being busy all weekend.
I did let people know about the forum, yes, there was a lot of interest in Psions, probably more than the Casios.

Yes, they are running it next year I believe. More exotic equipment would do well I think.

Sinclair QL

Post by Martin »

Hi Dave

Off topic I know but I have an affinity with the QL. I used it with surveying students but more than that I revised the department teaching schemes using QL Project Planner, by Triptych Publishing Ltd, in 1985. That was the same year that Microsoft bought the rights to 'planner' so no-one knew you could do that stuff on a 'computer'. I think that's what got me my first promotion. And because of that no one batted an eye when in 1989 I asked them for 6 PSION Organiser II LZ64's.

Happy days
Martin
