Fast5 Copier

Post by 1333david »

Hi,
I've seen Fast5 copier packs on eBay for sale but am unable to find any information on the software (how to use it and what it can do). There is nothing on Jaap's site and my googling has returned no results, so all I can assume is it copies (packs/files?) fast....
If anyone has any more information on this pack and whether it is useful, I'd be interested to learn more about it.
Thanks.
All the best,
Dave

Fast5 Copier

Post by Martin »

Hi Dave

I've never used it but do remember that Boris Cornet (RIP) used it in his DumpPack routine.
'
dumppack.zip
.
His included text below explains..
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DumpPack
by Boris Cornet (reusing code from Horatios brilliant fast5 routine)
Dumppack produces an exact copy of a pack on the PC, mostly even if UNMAKE fails.
Since it uses low level pack access, it will also copy protected or corrupted packs.
The OPKs produced are slightly different from standard OPK because all bytes on the pack are copied, the program does NOT stop at the <end-of-pack>-marker!
Please make sure the CommsLink is booted in and activate Psi2Win on the PC.
The program has an option to detect the pack size, but if you are copying an Organiser 1 pack or a pack with a corrupted pack header, you will have to specify the pack size.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

It is me selling them. There are no instructions since it is self explanatory, showing prompts etc. The “Fast” name I think is tongue in cheek as it does the copying a byte at a time and is extremely slow! It does ignore the copy protection on most packs, but the copies do not autoboot and the program name needs manually entering into the top level menu. There are packs that it can’t copy such as the pocket spreadsheet.
It really needs to be used with a power supply unless you know the battery is good, since it takes a lot of power (and a long time) to copy to packs, although it is faster with the low power CMOS chips.

Many thanks for you reply.
So, it copies one pack to the other on the Psion without the need for the PC? I see that could be useful. I guess once the Fast5 software is started, it will switch off at some point in the process to allow you to insert the source and destination packs.

It just comes up with the prompts to insert the packs and sizes. Then just copies B to C or vice versa.
